teaching/observing
so today i observed a class at a high school. it was a bit shocking.
class started more than 10 mins after the bell rang
students were on their phones while the teacher was lecturing
some were playing card-games
many were having side conversations while the teacher was giving a demonstration and cussing.
the teacher had to go “shhh” many times. and sometimes she just stood there waiting for silence, but it didn’t work. the students just kind of ignored her. i will go back tomorrow to check to see if there are any differences, or if it was just an occasional thing.
one of the student sat in the back of the class and didn’t care. i told him to draw because the teacher was coming, and he said “it’s ok, don’t worry about it.” then later, he asked for my help, and i helped him. though, i kinda ignored him because i wanted him to pay attention to the teacher’s instructions instead of asking me for help. i said “look at the teacher” and he said “i don’t want that woman’s help, i want you to help me.” i said, “no.” but after the teacher finished the demonstration, i helped him. maybe he just wanted individual help/attention. *shrugs
the teaching environment is kinda like my class when i taught Vietnamese last year. students were talking while i was lecturing and i tried many different methods to keep them quiet. students playing with their phone/game/laptop during class. i eventually gave up on them and let them do watever they want as long as they were quiet because they were distracting all the students who wanted to learn. it was quite frustrating for me and it wore me out quite fast.
this year, my students are better behaved. they got their loud times, but they got more moments of silence, and they pay attention more. with less distractions, i am able to focus on individuals more while being able to maintain a better learning environment for the entire class.
